No. 2007-04
23 June 2007

1.  REMINDER - CHANGE IN CHECK-IN TIMES:  We have changed start times forward to 9:30am for our Sunday meets.  This lets us complete our event earlier, and frees up the space of our host for other fencing activity on their schedule.

2.  REMINDER - UPCOMING EVENTS - THIS SUNDAY IS EPEE: Preregistration is open at askFred:

Open 1 Touch Epee - SUNDAY, 24 JUNE at 9:30 AM: preregister at http://askfred.net/Events/Prereg/prereg.php?tournament_id=3822.

This event is fenced as a pool unique; depending on how many entries we have we will fence either once or twice through the order.

3.  RESULTS:  Our open foil on 17 June was sparsely attended, so by agreement the fencers fenced through the pool twice for 6 hard fought bouts each:

1st Place - Lincoln Marquis - earned a Junior classification
2nd Place - Walter Green
3rd Place - Brian Ainley - earned his Novice classification
4th Place - Minta Smith

4.  BUSINESS MEETING ON 24 JUNE:  Immediately after the meet on 24 June we will hold a short business meeting with two key items on the agenda: (1) acceptance of the draft by-laws (a second copy is attached to this mailing), and (2) election of officers for the 2007-2008 fencing year.

5.  THREE WEAPON TEAM MEET:  We will run our first team competition as a Three Weapon meet at the end of July.  A three weapon team consist of one foilist, one epeeist, and one sabreur.  The competition is fenced as a pool of matches between the various teams - each match is one bout of foil, one of epee, and one of sabre.  If you have team mates in mind, now is time to start putting your team together.  If you do not, but want to fence on a team contact wgreen@sallegreen.com, and Salle Green will serve as a matchmaker.

6.  IF YOU KNOW OF ANY LOST FENCERS ...:  Fencers can join the American Fencing League direct through the national website.  We do not get any feedback when they do.  If you know of anyone who has joined, and does not appear to be in the loop for our newsletters or events, please let us know.

course, we then have to go back and do your registration for you, as we use FRED to report our results and for our points list ...

6.  BY-LAWS AND OFFICERS:  Every member should have received a copy of draft By-Laws for the Division by e-mail.  In the same e-mail we asked for nominations for officers for the 2007-2008 season.  After the 1 Touch Epee meeting on 24 June we will hold a short business meeting to come to closure on both.  Please forward any suggested changes to the by-laws and your nominations for office to wgreen@sallegreen.com as soon as possible.

1.    REMINDER - 3 WEAPON MEET THIS SUNDAY, SABRE ON 27 MAY:  We will fence an individual 3 Weapon meet at Salle Green on this coming Sunday, 13 May, starting at 10:00.  Preregistration is open at askFred: http://askfred.net/Events/Prereg/prereg.php?tournament_id=3776 - remember, preregistration is required.  A 3 Weapon meet includes 5 touches at foil, 1 touch at epee, and up to 5 touches in sabre.  The event is fenced double elimination.  If you are not going to fence, we would still appreciate help judging, score keeping, etc.

2.    POINTS LIST ON FRED:  Our points list for each weapon as maintained on askFred at http://askfred.net/Results/pointsLists.php is current.  The annual Point Championships is determined by the total number of points in all weapons that fencers earn during the fencing year ending on 1 August.

3.    TOURNAMENT RESULTS:  We are now posting tournament results on askFred on the day of the event.  A small turnout on 15 April for the Open Foil Meet did not deter the fencers who did participate.  Robb White earned his Junior and Walter Green and Michael Workman their Novice classifications.  Final placing was:

1st Place:  Robb White

2nd Place:  Walter Green

3rd Place:  Michael Workman

4th Place:  Pat Norman

The One Touch Epee Meet on 22 April attracted seven fencers, including two new members, Linda Barrett and Dot Mackey, attending their first competition above the club level.  Congratulations to Breet Colbert for earning his Novice classification.  Because we had a relatively small field, the pool unique was fenced two times through for 42 bouts.  Final placings were:

1st Place: Joseph Iaquinto

2nd Place: Walter Green

3rd Place: Brett Colbert

4th Place: James McMath

5th Place: Linda Barrett

6th Place: Pat Norman

7th Place: Dot Mackey

4.         POINT CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS ON FRED:  We now have the Division’s annual point championships point totals available on FRED.  When we enter the results of one of our tournaments, FRED automatically computes the points and makes them available to you.  To check your point totals go to http://askfred.net/Results/pointsLists.php or simply look in the results pull-down on FRED’s front page for Point Standings.  FRED lists the standings by weapon – the total we use for the Annual Point Championships is based on the sum of the events you enter in all three weapons.  Points for each event are awarded in inverse order to placing – if there are 8 fencers, 1st place earns 8 points and 8th place earns 1 point.

5.         CURRENT AFL RULES:  Please be sure you are using the latest AFL rules – the November 2006 edition, available at: http://www.americanfencingleague.org/AFL%20rules.pdf.  This edition corrects some of the issues we noted in our Division rules, which are now in revision.  Our new edition of Central Virginia competition rules will continue:

… to fence three weapon events as 5 touch foil and sabre and 1 touch epee

… to allow double elimination events in addition to single (direct) elimination at three weapon

… to authorize the use of a 32 foot strip based on the old Amateur Fencing League of America rules

… to prohibit the use of points d’arret in epee

6.         WEBSITE:  This coming week we expect to have a Central Virginia AFL website up and running.  Further information will be out as soon as it is in business.
